Removing a Broken Key From a Lock

Two Ways That Changing Your New Home's Locks Can Reduce the Likelihood of It Being Burglarised

Whilst having a locksmith change all of the locks on your new home's exterior doors might sound like an unnecessary expense, it could actually spare you a lot of money and heartache in the long run, by reducing the likelihood of your property being burglarised. Read on to find out how.

By preventing those with copies from entering your home

If the previous occupant of your new home lived in the property for several years, there is a very good chance that at least one or two other people have copies of the existing keys.

People often give out copies of their keys to various people. They may give them to tradespeople when having parts of their home renovated or repaired. They may also give people such as their cleaner, their gardener or their nanny one of their spare keys, so that these individuals can enter the house when the owner is not at home.

Additionally, it is possible that the previous occupant had lodgers who they may have given keys to. Finally, some people like to provide their neighbours, relatives or close friends with a key to their home, for use during emergency situations.

As such, it is important to be aware of the possibility that a number of strangers may be able to enter your home at any time. Whilst the vast majority of people are trustworthy and would not take advantage of this fact, there are, unfortunately, dishonest individuals who might be inclined to use their copy of the keys to get into your property and steal your valuables.

Fortunately, you can prevent this from happening by hiring a locksmith to change the locks. Doing so will ensure that no-one that the previous occupant entrusted with their keys will be able to gain access to your home.

By making it harder for burglars to break in

Most burglars break into properties by snapping the locks on the exterior doors. This is actually a very simple process, which requires little more than a cheap tool and a moderate amount of physical strength.

The reason that is it so easy for burglars to do this is that most standard door locks are neither very robust nor well-made. As such, it takes almost no skill or effort to break them open.

As such, by asking a local locksmith to replace the existing locks on your property's doors with better ones (such as steel deadbolts, for example), you can make it much more difficult for a burglar to gain entry to your home via the front or back door.
